Selecting an Ostomy System

The first step in caring for your stoma is selecting the proper ostomy system for your unique needs and lifestyle. This will ensure you are as comfortable as possible, and that you maintain a healthy relationship with your stoma. In this article, we go through a few simple steps that will help you select the perfect ostomy system based on your needs.

Ostomy Selection

One-Piece Ostomy System

In a one-piece system, the pouch and skin barrier are a single unit. Designed for discretion, these systems offer simplicity and flexibility in a low-profile system. They are available in cut-to-fit and pre-cut adhesive types.

Traditional Two-Piece Ostomy System

In a two-piece system, the pouch and skin barrier are two separate pieces that allow you to change the pouch without removing the skin barrier. With this system, the pouch and skin barrier are coupled together with a plastic ring. You can hear and feel the system securely lock into place.

Two-Piece with Adhesive Coupling

With this system, the pouch and skin barrier are coupled together with a foam adhesive ring and “Landing Zone,” eliminating the need for rigid plastic coupling rings found in traditional two-piece systems. This foam coupling mechanism is more flexible than traditional systems and has a lower profile under clothing.
